USVI - After a productive meeting in Washington, D.C. with the U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has secured more than $34 million in restored federal education funding through the American Rescue Plan Act. This funding will allow the Virgin islands to continue critical school upgrades like new backup generators, air conditioning systems, and safer learning environments across the Territory.

“This is what leadership looks like - being present, making the case, and delivering results,” said Governor Bryan.

Gov. Bryan Warns of Trouble

Governor Bryan has expressed deep disappointment and concern with the 36th Legislature’s decision to override his veto of Bill N. 36-0053. Which provides for government employees to receive an annual raise from the current $27,000 to $35,000.

The Governor described it as an unfunded mandate passed without financial analysis, a cost plan, or stakeholder consultation.

“This decision may not appeal to public sentiment, but it was made with the long term welfare of this Territory in mind. Governance is not about following opinion polls, it is about doing what is right, even when it is difficult,” the Governor stated.

While reaffirming his full support for fair compensation reform, Governor Bryan warned that irresponsible mandates threaten critical services and risk reversing years of fiscal progress.

Although there has been some public speculation on the part of certain Senators as to where the funding for such raises will be obtained, as of this date the St. Croix Times has been unable to pin down the exact sources for the annual increase to $35,000 for government employees.
