DOL Issues Final Notice to Delinquent Businesses

ree

USVI - The Virgin Islands Department of Labor (VIDOL) has issued a final compliance notice to 2,000 businesses that remain delinquent in filing mandatory quarterly wage and tax reports for more than eight (8) consecutive quarters. These repeated violations of Virgin Islands law jeopardize the financial stability of the Unemployment Insurance (UI) system and place an undue burden on fully compliant employers.

The Department is taking the critical enforcement step to safeguard the solvency and integrity of the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund which provides vital support to Virgin Islands workers during periods of unemployment. Failure to comply with the final notice within fourteen (14) business days of receipt will result in immediate legal action. Enforcement measures may include the filing of tax liens, levies, and other collection remedies authorized under Virgin Islands tax law.

“Employers have a statutory responsibility to report wages and contribute to the unemployment insurance system, which serves as a critical safety net for workers in times of economic hardship,” stated VIDOL Commissioner Dr. Gary Molloy. “When employers fail to comply, they not only violate the law but also threaten the very foundation of a system designed to stabilize our workforce and economy.”

Employers who have received a final compliance notice are urged to take prompt corrective action to avoid legal proceedings and potential financial penalties. Immediate assistance is available to businesses requiring support to bring their accounts current or to verify their reporting status.

For assistance, employers may contact VIDOL, Unemployment Insurance Division at 340-773-1994 ext 2208, 2200 (St. Croix) or email: uitax@dol.vi.gov.
