St. Croix - The Tall Ship Denis Sullivan wrapped up another successful winter stay in St. Croix, USVI, and headed back to its summer resting spot at its home base in Boston. It was another great season for all hands-on-deck, the hundreds of students, and the many families and friends of the Tall Ship that experienced her graceful wonders.
During her stay in Christiansted Harbor, students came aboard to experience her hands-on experiential educational programs, as hundreds enjoyed her many events and the wonderful breathtaking sunset sails around the Big Island.
“We can’t thank you enough for your continued generosity, and we can’t wait to come back in the fall,” said the family of the World Ocean School.
The Denis Sullivan and crew departed the Christiansted Harbor with 16 students from Ashley Hall aboard embarking on a multi-day program to Charleston, SC. Students from the all-girls Charleston school will spend their voyage experiencing life aboard the ship, which includes standing watch, learning celestial navigation, and climbing aloft and out to the heading.
“We are proud to continue partnering with Ashley Hall and to offer this horizon-expanding adventure to a new cohort each year,” said a World Ocean School spokesperson.
After leaving Chaleston, SC, the Denis Sullivan will haul out in Savannah, GA for the first time in two years for a five-week yard period. After all repairs are complete, the crew will head north to start the summer season in Boston.
Summer Ambassador Program
The S/V Denis Sullivan will be offering its Summer Ambassador Program from August 3 - August 10, 2026, out of Boston, Mass. All students in grades 8-12 are welcome to join the working crew of this classic tall ship for a week at sea as it sails the New England coast, explores historic ports and islands, and builds confidence in young minds through hands-on sailing adventures. No prior sailing experience is required, just bring a sense of curiosity and a willingness to try new adventures.
Each voyage follows the wind and the weather, just like traditional sailing ships have for centuries.
Sail by day and anchor by night, alongside a professional crew and fellow students. Explore engineering, seamanship and maritime history. Enjoy land excursions to islands, museums and ports along the journey.
Deadline to apply: June 1, 2026.
Cost: $4,800 (families have an opportunity to apply for need-based financial assistance).
