DPNR ISSUES HURRICANE PREPARATION GUIDANCE FOR CONTRACTORS, DEVELOPERS, AND HOMEOWNERS 

Commissioner Jean-Pierre L. Oriol of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources  (DPNR) is urging residents, contractors, developers, and homeowners to take the  necessary precautions and begin storm preparations ahead of the approach of Tropical  Storm Dolly. 

Guidance for Contractors, Developers, and Home Builders 

DPNR is also advising all contractors, developers, and home builders to inspect  construction sites and immediately implement additional erosion and sediment control  measures in areas that have been cleared, graded, filled, or otherwise disturbed. 

Property owners and contractors should identify areas vulnerable to erosion and take  corrective action where necessary. Recommended measures include: 

• Preservation of natural vegetation 

• Drainage swales and diversions 

• Temporary and permanent seeding 

• Soil sealers and binders 

• Erosion control mats 

• Retaining walls 

• Stabilized construction entrances and exits 

• Silt fencing 

• Sediment traps 

• Mulches, mats, and geotextiles 

Construction materials, equipment, and any loose items that could become airborne  during high winds should be removed or properly secured to prevent damage to  neighboring properties and critical infrastructure.

Wind Turbine Safety Reminder 

Commissioner Oriol is also reminding residents who have wind turbines installed on  their properties to lower turbine towers before the arrival of severe weather. Property  owners should ensure that setback areas surrounding the turbines are free of structures  or objects that could be damaged or become airborne debris during storm conditions.
