Gyptian’s ‘Hold Yuh’ Fuels Viral Video with Ed Sheeran

Fifteen years after its original release, Gyptian’s 2010 hit “Hold Yuh’ is experiencing a resurgence thanks to a viral video featuring British pop sensation Ed Sheeran.
Captured during a spontaneous street performance in London, the clip shows Mr. Sheeran in collaboration with DJ AG, delivering a remix of the dancehall classic. The video, which has garnered significant attention on TikTok and other social media platforms, has catapulted Gyptian back into the global spotlight.
Gyptian has since endorsed the “Thinking Out Loud” Superstar’s performance with multiple reposts on his Instagram story, signalling his appreciation of the homage.
The “Bad Habits” Brit is no stranger to dancehall music, collaborating with the Jamaican dancehall sensation Ishawna on a track titled ”Brace It” in 2022. The collaboration came about after Mr. Sheeran expressed his love for Ishawna’s “Equal Rights,” a remix of his 2017 hit single “Shape of You” in an interview. “Brace It,” written by Sheeran, Ishwana and Skatta Burrell, has amassed more than six million streams and topped the iTunes Reggae Chart.
yptian, born Windel Beneto Edwards, achieved international success with “Hold Yuh” as the track peaked at #77 on the Billboard 100 and #16 on the UK Singles Chart. The song’s popularity was further amplified by a remix featuring American/Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj. In 2013, it was certified Gold in the U.S. and later achieved Platinum status in the UK.
Gyptian’s career began in the early 2000’s, with his signature style, condensing reggae, dancehall, and lover’s rock, earning him a dedicated following. Over the years, he has been recognized for his contributions to the genre, including a nomination for Best New Entertainer at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards.
Gyptian has continued to produce music and garner fans worldwide. He recently released singles such as “Wanna Keep It” and “Changes” both now available on all major streaming platforms.
