Sea currents likely played a key role in the whale’s death and beaching

Sperm whales are deep-water animals. They do not normally spend time in shallow coastal surf. People should not touch a stranded animal unless trained officials instruct them to do so. Even well-meaning attempts can harm the animal or put people in danger.


Live marine mammals can thrash, roll, or strike with a tail. Dead animals can spread bacteria, leak fluids, or rupture during decomposition. Sea turtles, rays, sharks, and other animals also create their own risks.


Distance gives responders room to work and reduces stress on a live animal.


Report the location and condition


A useful report includes:


  • The location, with a landmark if possible

  • Whether the animal is alive, injured, weak, or dead

  • The approximate size and type of animal, if known

  • Photos or video taken from a safe distance

  • Any signs of fishing gear, wounds, oil, or entanglement

  • The sea conditions, including tide, waves, and currents


Photos can help experts identify the species and decide what response is needed. No photo is worth unsafe contact.


Do not push large animals back into the water without permission


Pushing, dragging, or towing a stranded animal may make the situation worse. A live whale or dolphin may strand again if it is sick, disoriented, or too weak to swim. A dead animal may drift into swimming areas, navigation routes, or fishing grounds.


Trained teams consider animal welfare, public safety, water conditions, equipment, and disposal options before acting.


Avoid removing tissue, bones, teeth, or oil


Whale parts may interest collectors, but removing them can create health, legal, and conservation problems. Dead marine wildlife may fall under protected status or require official handling. Biological samples may also help experts understand what happened.


Leaving the animal undisturbed preserves evidence and reduces the risk of disease exposure.

That does not mean every nearby beach becomes unsafe. It means people should listen to local warnings and avoid entering the water where officials report feeding activity.


The presence of sharks also shows that the ocean is functioning as an ecosystem. Scavengers recycle nutrients from a dead whale back into the sea. In deep water, whale falls can feed entire communities of animals. Nearshore, the process is messier and more visible, but it remains part of nature.


The public safety message stays the same: admire the ocean’s wildlife from a safe distance.
