Saint Lucia - The U.S. State Department  issued a travel advisory on July 14, 2026 for the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia due to a dramatic increase in localized crime. The Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution Travel Advisory, means that travelers are urged to remain highly aware of their surroundings, avoid walking or driving alone at night, and refrain from displaying expensive jewelry or large sums of cash.

Violent crime - including armed robbery, burglary, and sexual assault/rape - can occur anywhere on the island, even in popular tourist areas and at resorts. U.S. Embassy officials note that emergency response times by local police can be slower than expected in the U.S.

“In some cases, U.S. citizens have been killed,” the advisory states.

Besides violent crime, petty theft remains common, particularly in popular tourist areas.

“Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing,”

The U.S. State Department advises if you are confronted during a robbery, authorities strongly advise against resisting.

Travelers are further warned about overcharging, scams and aggressive vendors in tourist areas, though the advisory notes that many attractions have tourist police available to assist visitors.

Additionally, the U.S. Embassy has restricted government employees from staying at specific resort properties like the Ladera Resort near Soufriere due to safety and emergency response concerns.

Other factors to consider: Healthcare facilities are limited on the island, and emergency services may lack the capacity for advanced or specialized treatments. Also, Saint Lucia is located in the hurricane belt, and this time of the year, the island is susceptible to severe storms and heavy rainfall.

U.S, citizens must hold a valid passport that is valid for the duration of your intended stay. You must also have a return or onward ticket and confirm your accommodation prior to arrival.

Known for its volcanic Pitons, luxury resorts and tropical beaches, Saint Lucia attracts visitors from around the world.
