Grenada - The U.S. Department of State has increased its travel advisory to a Level 2 for the country of Grenada, urging Americans “to exercise increased caution” when heading to the country. The advisory was updated on January 5, 2026, to include the crime indicator, mentioning instances of armed robbery, assault, burglary, and rape against American citizens.

“Violent crime can occur anywhere in Grenada,” the State Department wrote in its advisory, adding “in some cases, American citizens have been killed. Police response times are not as fast as one may expect in the United States.”

The State Department recommends travelers be cautious when walking or driving at night, stay aware of their surroundings, keep a low profile, and not answer the door at their hotel or residence unless they know who it is. If there is an incident, the Department said travelers should not physically resist a robbery attempt.

Following the recent reclassification, Grenada’s government emphasized the country’s “strong record of public safety, social stability, and effective law enforcement.”

“Grenada has long been home to a significant and vibrant population of United States citizens, many of whom live, work, study, and invest in our tri-island state…Additionally, hundreds of thousands of visitors travel to Grenada annually, enjoying our renowned hospitality, rich culture, and world-class tourism offerings,” the Grenada government wrote in a statement posted to their Facebook account. “Grenada continues to proactively address security concerns and uphold the highest standards of protection for nationals and visitors alike.”

The Government added: “As a premier tourism destination, Grenada remains fully committed to providing a secure, enjoyable, and enriching experience for travelers.”

Just last year 2025, Grenada was listed among the 10 safest Caribbean destinations, by travel experts TravelPulse and Always All-Inclusive.

The U.S. State Department issues four advisory levels for Americans travelling around the world:

U.S. Travel Advisory Levels:

#1 - Exercise normal precautions

#2 - Exercise increased caution

#3 - Reconsider travel

#4 - Do not travel
