USVI - Former V.I. Department of Education (VIDE) Tablet Program Partner, Corey Alston, who was introduced to VIDE by 2026 presumptive Gubernatorial candidate Donna Frett-Gregory, was sentenced to 41 months in prison for a massive COVID-19 Medicare fraud scheme that involved scamming $2.6 million. His co-defendant, Latresia Wilson received five years probation.

Mr. Alston, who had partnered with the VIDE to provide free tablet computers to qualifying households under a now-shuttered federal initiative, pleaded guilty in April 2025 to conspiring to defraud the United States and to illegally purchase Medicare beneficiary identification numbers in connection with a scheme to bill Medicare for COVID-19 test kits that were ineligible for reimbursement.

According to court documents, Mr. Alston, 47, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and his co-defendant, Latresia A. Wilson, conspired to unlawfully purchase Medicare beneficiary identification information (including Medicare Beneficiary Identification Numbers) and used that information to submit millions of dollars in claims to Medicare for COVID-19 test kits that beneficiaries did not want or request.

Over the course of just seven months, from July 2022 through February 2023, Mr. Alston, Ms. Wilson and others, through companies they owned and controlled, submitted over $8.4 million in false and fraudulent claims to Medicare that were ineligible for reimbursement. Medicare paid over $2.6 million based on the false and fraudulent claims.

Middle District of Florida Judge Gregory Presnell ordered the two to pay restitution to Medicare in the amount of $2,601,888.24 starting with a monthly sum of $200 for Ms. Wilson and $150 for Mr. Alston after he is released from prison.

Mr. Alston, who also goes by the first name of Bobbi, has previously had his skirts with the law, being allegedly linked to a few incidents of corruption in public office and fraud in his private businesses. All of which came to light after VIDE publicly thanked former Senator Donna Frett-Gregory for making the introduction, whereby his company Heritage Wireless, were slated to provide free internet and tablet computers to students on the Free and Reduced Breakfast & Lunch programs. The initiative was part of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) which all seemed above board except for the fact the program was on schedule by Congress to expire even before the VIDE effort was announced.
