Dominican Republic - A massive fire at the luxury Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Resort, a four-star resort, killed one female tourist and left at least nine others injured in the town of Bayahibe, La Altagracia province, Dominican Republic. Bayahibe is a popular destination for American and International tourists on the southeastern coast of the island.
The fire broke out at around 11 am on Friday, June 19, 2026 and quickly spread throughout the thatched-roof structures of the beachside resort. Fifteen firefighting units from La Romana and surrounding areas responded to the scene and struggled to contain the blaze as 1,600 guests staying at the 700-room resort were evacuated to other hotels and nearby housing facilities.
Although the cause of the fire was under investigation, the Emergency Operations Center said a preliminary investigation found that the blaze spread quickly because a good portion of the resort’s roof was made of cane, which is a highly combustible material. Windy conditions also contributed to the rapid spread.
Hundreds of tourists ran to the beach and to safety as huge plumes of smoke billowed over the luxury compound as the inferno nearly completely destroyed the Wyndham resort.
“At this time, we are actively gathering the facts regarding the incident and coordinating with the appropriate authorities and on-site teams,” said a spokesperson from Viva Resorts at Wyndham. “As this process is ongoing, we will not be providing comment at this time.”
