Inmate Stabbed in Prison Cries out for Help

St. Thomas - On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at approximately 6:10 am, an Officer of the Bureau of Corrections, St. Thomas, responded to a cry for help. Upon making contact, the Officer observed that inmate Rehelio Trant was in another inmate’s cell, standing over the inmate while holding a knife in his right hand. The other inmate was observed clutching his neck with blood on his hands and shouting for help.
Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to Schneider Regional Medical Center where he was evaluated and treated for his injuries.
The Bureau of Corrections and the Virgin Islands Police Department are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rehelio Trant was charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, Mayhem and Brandishing and Exhibiting a Dangerous Weapon. Bail was set at $150,000.
