VIOHS NEWS RELEASE -

U.S. Virgin Islands –The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD)/Office of Highway  Safety (VIOHS) issues an urgent appeal to motorists and all road users to exercise greater  caution and make roadway safety a priority. Thus far in 2026, the territory has recorded  3,631 traffic crashes, resulting in 662 injuries and 13 fatalities. Behind the numbers are  individuals and families whose lives have been forever changed.

Every decision made behind the wheel has consequences. Speeding, distracted driving,  impaired driving, aggressive driving, and failure to use appropriate occupant restraints place  all road users at risk. A moment of carelessness or poor judgment can result in a lifetime of  devastating consequences.

Roadway safety is everyone's responsibility. Motorists are urged to obey posted speed limits,  remain focused on the road, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and ensure  that all vehicle occupants are properly restrained. Motorcyclists are reminded to wear  appropriate protective equipment, while pedestrians should remain alert and exercise caution  when traveling along or crossing roadways. Passengers also have a responsibility to advocate  for their safety. Speaking up when a driver is speeding, distracted, impaired, or engaging in  other unsafe driving behaviors could prevent a tragedy and save lives.

The VIPD and VIOHS extend their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones  affected by these tragedies. Preventing traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities requires a  collective commitment. No destination, appointment, or moment of convenience is worth  risking a human life. Arriving safely should always take precedence over arriving quickly.

For more safe roadway strategies or to offer solutions to improve roadway safety, contact the  Virgin Islands Office of Highway Safety through VIOHS Director Daphne O’Neal at  daphne.oneal@vipd.vi.gov, or Ms. Denise Gomes, at denise.gomes@vipd.vi.gov, or via  telephone at (340) 712-6073.
