FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(U.S. Virgin Islands) – V.I. Attorney General Gordon C. Rhea announces that 25-year-old Calijah Brewley has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his guilty plea to Second-Degree Murder in the May 15, 2020, shooting death of Selena Chitolie. V.I. Superior Court Judge Alphonso Andrews imposed the sentence on October 8, 2026.
Brewley pleaded guilty to Second-Degree Murder on May 6, 2024, pursuant to a plea agreement offered by former DOJ Criminal Chief Amie Simpson. His sentencing comes more than two years after his guilty plea.
The case dates back to May 15, 2020, when 19-year-old Chitolie was shot while driving through the Mount Pleasant area of Frederiksted, St. Croix, with her family as they searched for a rental home. According to the police affidavit referenced in the case, the family came under gunfire as they approached Evelyn M. Williams Elementary School. Chitolie sustained a gunshot wound to the back of her neck and was airlifted for further treatment but later succumbed to her injuries. Her mother, Nissa Camacho, was also shot in the neck and continues to carry a bullet fragment.
On March 19, 2021, while already being held in the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, Brewley was formally re-arrested after Chitolie succumbed to her injuries. The charges against were upgraded to First-Degree Murder following her death.
The case involved three additional defendants: Jiovanni Smith, Jerome Wallace III, and Maynard Caliquan, who was a minor at the time. Smith previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in prison in September 2024. A motion to dismiss the case against Wallace has been filed, and the court has yet to rule on the motion.
